420HC is the higher-carbon member of the 420 martensitic stainless family. It is not chosen to win a laboratory contest for maximum edge retention. It is chosen because good corrosion resistance, toughness, straightforward sharpening and sensible cost can make an exceptionally practical knife.

Kizlyar Supreme processes each steel batch separately, using a dedicated heat-treatment cycle based on the steelmaker’s recommendations and the knife’s intended use. We precisely control heating temperature and holding time, then manage cooling and tempering to develop the required working properties. This disciplined, repeatable process helps us bring out the steel’s full potential and deliver the balance of edge retention, toughness and reliability we design into each knife.
For Kizlyar Supreme throwing knives, 420HC may be treated to approximately 44–45 HRC, prioritising ductility and repeated-impact tolerance over edge retention. For working knives, typical targets are around 56–57 HRC, where the steel can provide a more durable cutting edge while retaining its practical toughness and easy maintenance.
At Kizlyar Supreme, electronically regulated furnaces and our on-site nitrogen supply provide precisely controlled heating in a protective atmosphere. We also carefully control cooling and tempering to achieve the hardness and toughness required for each knife. Combined with model-specific blade and edge geometry, this is how we get the most useful performance from 420HC. The exact product specification remains the reference for each knife.

Rinse or wipe away salt, food acids, sap and dirt, then dry the blade. Stainless means corrosion-resistant, not completely immune.
Store the knife clean and dry. A thin layer of suitable protective oil is sensible before long storage or use in humid and marine conditions.
