WHAT MICARTA IS

Micarta is a family of layered thermoset laminates. Sheets of fabric, canvas, paper or other reinforcement are impregnated with resin, compressed and cured into a dense structural material. Knife-handle Micarta is commonly made with textile reinforcement, giving the finished scale a warmer and more organic character than glass-fabric laminate.

A MATERIAL WITH INDUSTRIAL ROOTS

Micarta dates to 1909, when George Westinghouse used Leo Baekeland’s phenolic resin to create a laminate for electrical insulation. A material born for demanding industrial service later became valued in knife handles because it combines strength, machinability and a surface that develops character with use.

Kizlyar Supreme chooses Micarta when a knife should feel warm, controlled and natural in the hand without the movement and maintenance of untreated wood. Our designers use the layered construction as part of the visual language of the handle: three-dimensional machining reveals changing lines and patterns across every contour.

GRIP THAT COMES FROM THE WEAVE

When Micarta is machined, microscopic texture from the reinforcing layers can remain at the surface. Together with Kizlyar Supreme’s handle geometry and milling pattern, this gives the hand useful feedback without relying only on sharp grooves or aggressive checkering.

WHY EVERY HANDLE LOOKS A LITTLE DIFFERENT

The visible pattern follows the fabric layers and the depth of each machined curve. Small variations are natural and make the material visually alive. Colour may also deepen with handling as the surface develops a patina; this is normal and is one reason many enthusiasts value Micarta.

MICARTA OR G10?

Micarta often feels warmer and more organic, with a softer visual texture. G10 is generally harder, more rigid and can show especially crisp multicolour machining. Neither is automatically superior. Kizlyar Supreme selects the material according to the knife’s role, handle construction and the experience we want the user to have.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

Clean the handle with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, then dry the complete knife. Avoid long soaking, open flame, excessive heat and aggressive solvents. Oils from the hand may darken the surface over time; a careful wash usually lightens recent marks, while a mature patina can remain.

IS MICARTA WATERPROOF?

The cured resin creates a highly durable laminate, but exposed textile at machined surfaces can retain a small amount of moisture. Treat Micarta as water-resistant rather than magically waterproof, and dry the whole knife after wet or salty use.

DOES ALL MICARTA PERFORM THE SAME WAY?

No. Reinforcement, resin system, layer density, curing and machining all influence strength, grip and appearance. Kizlyar Supreme treats the material name as a starting point: the finished handle must still be designed, machined and fitted correctly for the knife.
