K340 steel was developed by Bohler for use in heavy tools and dies. Its manufacturing technology is protected by the BOHLER K340 ISODUR® patent
The production of K340 uses an electroslag melting process that eliminates harmful impurities. The second trump card of the line is longitudinal cross rolling, which means very high stability of the steel and minimal internal stresses.
K340 is normally used for middle and upper price segment knives.
What are its advantages?
Due to its very homogeneous microstructure and uniform carbon distribution, knives made of K340 have unique impact strength even at high hardness.
The hardness range is 59-64 HRC, with 62-63 HRC being optimal for knives. At this hardness, the knife has the best cutting and edge retention without losing its strength.
Close cooperation with Bohler specialists and the availability of modern hardening equipment have allowed us to find the optimal hardening cycle for this interesting steel.
What results do we get?
K340 blades are comparable to the legendary D2 steel when it comes to aggressive cutting and edge retention, but are many times stronger and more resistant to chipping. This gives us the opportunity to curve the blades as thinly as possible, which means taking advantage not only of the cut of the steel itself, but also of the geometry of the blade.
K340 is quite corrosion resistant thanks to its chromium content of 8.3%, but it is not one of the stainless steels. In practice, minimal maintenance (wipe the knife from moisture after use) is quite sufficient.
Due to its high homogeneity, the steel is quite easy to sharpen. Even in the field it is not a problem to correct the knife.
K340 is excellent for any type of knives, and it will maximize its performance where the knife will work with heavy loads: Hiking of any complexity, hunting and cutting, long stays in the woods when a knife has to do everything from chopping to batoning.
Choose this steel when you need a blade that will not let you down in all conditions.
ADVANTAGES:
Uniformity and stability
Durability and resistance to chipping
Excellent edge retention
Easy sharpening
DISADVANTAGES:
Corrosion protection properties are average
Requires little maintenance.
